Dawning

I wonder if those Americans who have been opposed to President Elect Obama's candidacy can come close to understanding the gravity of last night's results for his supporters. For me, it was an overwhelming storm of relief (the last eight years...), hope, pride and joy. I'm proud that the voters of this nation could send an African-American man to the White House. I am, without a doubt, sorely verklempt. I said earlier in the campaign that I wasn't as psyched about Obama's candidacy as I was about Clinton's in '92 but that evaporated last night...I think Obama is the right man for this time and that our country is in even greater need of conscientious leadership than we were then. I only wished that we might have had some James Brown at the end of that speech, something to match the ebullience of '92's Fleetwood Mac.

And on that score (o_O), I present to you some Barack Obama Boogie---the final version of yesterday's election playlist. I love my peeps who called or commented suggestions because it was a great distraction from the anticipation of the returns last night. I've removed almost all of the irony and tension because I. Am. Just. So. Freakin'. Happy. Enjoy.

In what everyone thought would be a tight race record numbers of voters showed up to support Obama to a convincing victory. Seriously, that shit wasn't even close. This is what America is; people taking their future in to their own hands in an enthusiastic and hopeful manner. Gravity indeed.

I am completely knocked out by it, Lyman. My belief in the possibilities of liberty and justice for all in this country is sincerely renewed.

At last. I think that it is important to celebrate the fact that this is the most impressive performance in the popular vote by a non-incumbent Democrat since 1932. Yes, even more than Clinton's 1992 win, who had an assist from Perot. The rest of the news is mixed, but I really believe this is the beginning of the end of Neo-conservatism.

I hope so, Devin. I really do. And I have reason to be hopeful today...

Another (besides Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah," which we discussed this morning in a text chat that threatened to kill me as I crossed streets in Crystal City - but it was worth courting death):

Falling Slowly - for the lyrics

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You've made it now

(thanks so much for introducing me to that movie and its soundtrack).

Jill--I'm thrilled you share my enthusiasm for that. It does take a hold of you, doesn't it? Those lyrics from "Falling Slowly" are indeed perfect. Did I tell you that my niece learned to play it on piano for me as a surprise when I visited her at Bard? Such a sweetie.

The texting this morning was a hoot!

All I have to do now is get my spinning under control and I'll have some real credibility with you, eh???

You don't need anything to get credibility from me. You got it, babe.

Hee! And how could I have forgotten to include John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance". I'm about to edit...
