Digging the Jazz Vocals

"Since I Fell for You" -- Bob James, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau (Double Vision, 1988)

I've really enjoyed the last track I've had playing the last couple of days. Reeves is an amazing, amazing vocalist---head and shoulders above any female singing today, in my opinion. It reminded me of a stunning performance handed in by Al Jarreau (always wonderful) on a smooth-jazzish cd done by David Sanborn and Bob James in 1988 (Double Vision). I've always thought this was the best rendition of "Since I Fell for You" I've ever heard. In addition to Al's singing, I love the tension between Sanborn's sax and his voice---its driving and somehow very sexy (as alto sax voices often are). Making it even more compelling, David Sanborn is on the cover of this month's Downbeat. Dig. Its about 5 minutes long and the best part is kinda' in the middle.

This is one of the only Bob James' songs where I can commend his playing... great choice!

Me, too, and let me tell you; its because I'm so swept away by Jarreau and Sanborn!
