Back to School

Tomorrow I'm heading off to visit Niece #2 who is in her first semester of college. I can.not.wait.

I have new music for the drive:
Carole King -- Tapestry, Legacy edition. I have it on excellent recommendation that the disc of piano and vocals only versions of those tracks are incredible. Having seen Ms. King play with a very very spare ensemble a couple of years ago, I'm certain this will please.

Yo-Yo Ma & Friends -- Songs of Joy. I'm a little nervous about this one; afraid it might be one more of those watered down celebrity guest duo albums but what I heard online, the guest lineup---it sounds like it could be really awesome if done well. Included: James Taylor (Here Comes the Sun), Natalie MacMaster (that Newfoundland fiddler I saw earlier this year), Dave Brubeck, my man Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Paquito D'Rivera, Alison Krauss -- so its not the usual line-up for an easy credit crowd. I'll report back.

Tift Merritt -- Tambourine. This is the disc that Good Hearted Man came from with the most impressive band lineup: Gary Louris, George Drakoulias, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench (give me those Heartbreakers, baby!). I have high hopes for this one.

Paste Magazine Sampler #47 -- with a bunch of stuff I've never heard and a couple I have--Kimya Dawson, Marc Broussard.

So I'm definitely prepared for some ear-damaging volume and steering wheel percussion as I roll up 95 North into the Hudson Valley--I'll have to play New York State of Mind, won't I? Oh, don't forget! This will be the first opportunity I've had to hear (uninterrupted) Lyman's latest recording on the Wave Mechanic's Union disc. What I've heard so far has been really surprising and fun. Has anyone else heard it?

Upon return, there's greaat excitement awaiting: Rob's birthday, the kickoff of this year's Knitting Bullfrogs club and then...oh, yes, THEN: ten days in Vancouver and Seattle. Oh---and in between, the election....

Hi, my names Don and I love Carol King. When we made the switch, many many years ago, from vinyl to CD, Tapesty was one of the few that I had to find on CD. I still think it is one of the greatest albums ever and I love listening to it.

I will have to look for this edition.

for sure, Don. Tapestry is certainly one of the best albums ever. I did a post once where I said if I had to pick just one album to last me the rest of my life, that would be the one. The disc of piano/vocal recordings I received yesterday is absolutely beautiful. There is so much music in her voice, so much depth in her piano that you won't miss the band at all. Let me know what you think of you run it down.
