Last Walking Day before Surgery

"All For You" -- Sister Hazel (Somewhere More Familiar, 1997)

Thank god. My heel is killing me. I can't stand it. Or on it---hahaha.

You know, clinical care in our country should be better. I had my pre-op blood work drawn Tuesday morning. Today my surgeon's office called me to try to track it down. After a lot of time, the lab finally figured out that the blood had been hemolyzed (OK---that should just NEVER happen) and so they couldn't run the tests. And apparently, they couldn't notify us of that either? So I had to dash down to the clinic in my building and wheedle the staff into pulling the blood sample so I could run across town (yelling STAT STAT STAT all the while) and get the sample to their 24-hour facility by 4:00---when they stop letting crazy people in their doors. And did I mention, perhaps, that dashing is not one of my stronger skills these days? Hmmm?

Summer Learning
Anna and Haley are both doing well with their summer learning efforts. Anna is really doing a great job with her reading. We're so grateful for our neighbor's recommendations that brought us Mr. Gray. I think he's a little overwhelmed by our household, though. There's always a lot going on. I love how Anna is completely oblivious to everything other than what Mr. Gray is saying to her. When she engages, she's hooked.

Piano lessons
I'm ready to progress beyond the two quarter note songs. PLEASE! Haley, Anna and Lindsay are all over their middle C's and D's. I'll have to miss this Saturday's lesson with them and I hope it doesn't freak Rob out to be the home coach for that week or to relay the lesson---it can't be that complicated, though.

She was wrong...
So the other day I mistakenly attributed this song to Blues Traveler. Could have fooled me---I've thought it was their song for, oh, nearly ten years. I definitely like it, don't know anything else about Sister Hazel and wonder if they will end up being worth my effort to find out. But anyway, I love this lyric,

Hard to say what it is I see in you
Wonder if I'll always be with you
Words can't say, and I can't do,
Enough to prove
It's all for you...

And after all this time of really loving this song, I still couldn't tell you if this is a happy-to-be-in-love-with-you song or if its a why-the-hell-can't-you-accept-me-for-all-I-do-and-feel song. Maybe I'll know in a couple of days when I put up the next song I love called "All for you..."

The girls today...
Pilar's Mom came to visit with us today at the end of her stay here. She returns to Lima (no, not Ohio) soon. She brought the girls a pile of souveneirs including cute t-shirts and nice wool purses. Its spooky to me how much AnnaBanana looks like her Aunt Tracy in this picture. I'd never ever ever noticed that before. Raise your hand if you see it...

Reading...
I haven't done much reading on my own lately, spending most of my "free" time on music libraries and the unit's blog but I have been reading a book with the girls from the Dear America series. Its about a young black girl in Tennessee in 1919. I'm surprised at how not-heavy handed its treatment of racism is. Its been a very nice read and I think I might like to read more from this series with the girls. In it, two young girls have a large extended family include an Aunt named Beth Ann---they called her Aunt Thannie...I just love that. But we like Auntie Boo better for our Aunt Beth Ann.

Anna's Sweater
Is almost finished. I'm about to switch to peach for the neck shaping. I can't decide whether to do short- or three-quarter sleeves and what color (or combo) to use. Suggestions? The fabric of the sweater is fairly heavy so going to 3/4 sleeve would make it a late fall/most of winter garment but short sleeves would be strictly spring/fall. Decisions, decisions...

I'll be thinking about you today and hoping everything goes well. Is it a day surgery? Hopefully this will heal the heel, haha. The girls are lovely and Anna March does look a little like Aunt Tracy in that shot, Tracy's hair was a little wilder if you remember we teased her calling her Medusa (snake hair). You may not remember that but you probably remember what we teased you with, do you? I'm glad you did your little premade meals to make your life easier. It won't be fun being an invalid but if you can't walk now anyway with out big pain at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I'll give you a call this weekend to make sure you're OK. I remember being traumatized on at least three accounts by the people who allegedly love me: the size of my feet, the size of my, errr, "boy-catchers" (before and after), and my strong attachment to my mother in that horrible year when my Dad was in Alaska...

Hmmmph. At least Tracy's hair really WAS a mess.

LYFE, baby; no doubt about it. What do you think about the Sister Hazel song?

I love the song, I like the Edie Brickell one also. I guess you might have been too little to remember the one I was talking about but when you were a tot we called you hamhocks and grabbed your little legs. You would say in you little nasal toddler voice, I not hamhock. Then we would move on to torment Tracy or Beth. Ahhh the life of toddler under the care of a teenage cousin. We come from a long line of teasers that's for sure. Good luck to you today.

Well, certain things follow you all the life long---any bit of excess weight on my person just parks itself on my thighs. What's a girl to do? Truthfully---it may not be beautiful but there is some definite value in squishy legs..
