Indiana Wants Me...

Does anybody else remember that all-together forgettable song? Ah, well. Some things stick. Its not always good.

But as I'm heading to Indy for a whirlwind of family fun, celebrating Cousin Donna's SHHHHH! birthday, I thought I'd leave off with some new music I think will keep me happy on the airplane. Please meet Serena Ryder (if you've not already).

A Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist, she won the 2008 Juno for New Artist of the Year. I recently bought her 2006 release "If Your Memory Serves You Well" after hearing just a couple clips on her promotional website. The recording is largely a tribute to great songs written by Canadian artists. She KILLS me; her voice is huge and powerful, or small and evocative... back to back tracks remind me of Melissa Etheridge and then Rickie Lee Jones and then downright Amy Winehouse-ish. Tough to categorize by genre, too; she just seems to have ears that are wide open for a good song and the knack of shaking them up in a really pleasing way. I'll be really interested to hear what she does next as its supposed to be heavier on original material.
Check out "This Wheel's on Fire":

Peace.
